Our cardiovascular experts work as a team to provide the highest caliber of cardiovascular surgical treatment to ensure you get to your maximum heart health as quickly as possible.

Our award-winning cardiac surgical team

Our integrated team of patient-centered cardiovascular specialists has been nationally recognized for their clinical advancements and quality outcomes.

Under the leadership of our board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons, our cardiac surgical team is composed of:

  • Cardiovascular anesthesiologists
  • Cardiac perfusionists
  • Critical care physicians
  • Specially trained nursing staff

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) awarded Citrus Memorial its highest three-star rating for our patient care and effectiveness in aortic valve replacements and coronary artery bypass grafting procedures. STS is a nonprofit representing 7,300 surgeons, researchers and healthcare professionals. It only grants this top rating to 4-7 percent of participating organizations performing these two procedures.

Heart and vascular surgeries and procedures we offer

With our extensive expertise and experience, we are able to perform a wide array of cardiovascular surgeries and procedures, including:

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG)

CABG surgery, also known as heart bypass surgery, may be performed in patients who have blockages in one or more coronary arteries, restricting the blood flow to the heart muscle.

During a CABG, a vein from the leg or chest wall is used to "bypass" the blocked portion of the narrowed coronary artery to restore adequate blood flow to the heart muscle. This surgical procedure is typically used to help patients with obstructive coronary artery disease and can be used in a medical emergency during a heart attack.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a ballooning blood vessel in a major artery in the body.

Our expert vascular surgeons perform stent insertion procedures to repair abdominal aortic aneurysm. These procedures have a significantly shorter recovery time than open surgical methods for this level of aneurysm repair. The patient typically remains in the hospital overnight following the procedure and is discharged the next day.

Valve repair and replacement surgery

The heart has four valves (aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonic), and any of them may become damaged or diseased and require surgery. Our highly skilled cardiothoracic surgeons have extensive experience in valve replacement and repair using a variety of techniques.

Some patients may require heart valve replacement surgery using a traditional sternotomy (incision through the breast bone) or open-heart surgery. However, many valve replacements are able to be performed using advanced minimally invasive techniques, such as the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure.

Minimally invasive heart and vascular care

Minimally invasive procedures are beneficial alternatives to traditional open-heart surgeries. This is because minimally invasive procedures require significantly smaller incisions and use smaller instruments (catheters, endoscopes, laparoscopes). Benefits for patients include less scarring, pain and recovery time.

Some of the cardiovascular minimally invasive procedures we perform include:

TAVR

TAVR is a minimally invasive surgical alternative to repair a narrowed aortic valve by implanting an expandable balloon valve replacement into the heart.

This minimally invasive technique reduces blood loss, the chance of infection and pain and overall recovery time.

Although not every patient is a candidate for TAVR, our cardiothoracic surgery team will evaluate each patient individually and determine which surgical technique is most appropriate.

Radial heart catheterization

Our radial artery cardiac catheterization technique provides a less invasive approach. Our cardiac experts guide a thin, flexible tube (known as a catheter) through the wrist to detect and correct blockages in the heart. Patients often go home within hours of the completion of this procedure.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)

VATS is another type of minimally invasive surgery used for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions affecting the chest area. Most commonly, VATS is used to remove small cancerous ares of the lungs in an effort to eradicate cancerous cells in the body.

Vascular and thoracic surgery services

Other vascular and thoracic surgery procedures we perform include:

  • Access surgery
  • Carotid endarterectomy
  • Minimally invasive vascular diagnostic and interventional surgery
  • Peripheral vascular procedures
  • Radiofrequency heart ablation
  • Vascular bypass
